Carbery Housing Association’s Annual General Meeting, which will be
at 8 PM on Monday 24th of July, at the historic Eldon Hotel in
Skibbereen, will mark the community association’s first 5 years of
campaigning for sustainable social housing in West Cork.
CHA was set up in 2001 by concerned local citizens, to promote, develop
and manage social housing for rent for households, particularly singe
households, locked out of the private housing market. Since then Carbery
has had over 150 applications for housing.
Chris Smith, from the Irish Council for Social Housing will outline the
benefits of voluntary housing associations, and the obstacles facing their
development. Harry Bent from DHB Architects in Waterford will explain how
social housing can also be made sustainable and energy efficient.
CHA will outline the work carried out over the past year and its
proposals for 2006, including and Intelligent Energy Europe proposal to
the European Commission to develop renewable energy linked to a social
housing development. This new Project, to be carried out in partnership
with local authorities and housing associations in Belgium, Sweden and
Estonia, will reduce the cost of energy, as well as helping combat global
warming by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
